Chapter 64 One Bad News
Chapter 64 One Bad News
On the other side, Carter walked out of the room and down the corridor, soon meeting up with his four other colleagues.
The patrol officers' break room, being the primary crime scene, had been cordoned off by the arriving detectives. The coroner had been working inside for over ten minutes.
The group, trapped in the corridor and unable to see what was happening inside, were constantly gripped by a sense of urgency and were extremely anxious. Upon seeing Carter emerge, they quickly greeted him.
"Mr. Carter, you came out quickly. Didn't Agent Roch ask you too many questions?" Caspian asked.
"Mr. Carter, did Agent Rowling say when we can leave?" Edmund asked.
"Mr. Carter, do we need to go for questioning?" the two control room monitors asked.
Everyone has different concerns, and for a moment, Mr. Carter's ears were filled with voices.
As the person in charge of everyone, Carter had no choice but to patiently reply to each of them.
"Detective Luo didn't say when we'd be released; he's probably waiting for the autopsy results. That's the usual procedure at the investigation bureau—once the problem is identified, they'll decide what to do next. They might even have us fill out some forms."
"Agent Rowe didn't ask me anything. I just met Derek at the coffee machine around 4 a.m. That's all."
"As for whether you will be questioned, Mr. Luo Qiu didn't say. Perhaps he has other plans."
"Oh, I see." Upon hearing this explanation, Edmund and Caspian's expressions were indescribable, but the two control room inspectors were filled with trepidation.
"Derek came to the testing lab six times last night. He only talked about patrol matters, but that counts as a lead."
"Yes. Also, is what happened last night really as Edmund described? Derek was too tired and died suddenly... But considering how many people have come, even the coroner, it doesn't seem that simple."
"Hey, I didn't say Derek died suddenly. I just said Derek was very tired and he was resting. I didn't think much of it." Edmund was already a little nervous, but when he heard the two testers say that, he became even more nervous and quickly defended himself.
At this point, the two inspectors also began to lose control of their emotions.
"Hey, I heard you say Derek died suddenly, but now you're denying it... Anyway, we were both in the control room all night and barely saw Derek. We don't know what's going on outside. Now that something's happened to him, it's definitely related to you guys."
"What does this have to do with me? I didn't say it was a sudden death. You're talking about Edmund, don't drag me into it," Caspian said.
"What do you mean it's related to me...?" Edmund exclaimed anxiously.
"Wait, gentlemen, please stop for a moment."
Mr. Carter couldn't hold back any longer and shouted for a stop, forcibly separating the two groups of people who were getting closer and closer.
"How can we not argue about Derek's matter? If we really want to know what happened, we can have a proper discussion about what we each know..."
"Oh, the coroner is out."
Carter urged everyone to calmly recount the events so that they could all understand the truth.
However, before he could finish speaking, the others were all drawn to the coroner who had suddenly appeared.
Everyone fell silent for a moment; now, Carter didn't need to offer any further advice.
……
After leaving the lounge, the young coroner took a notebook and headed towards Luo Qiu's room.
He walked along, sighing and shaking his head.
A few minutes after he knocked on the door and entered the room, Luo Qiu and Smith finally came out of the room and came to the front of everyone.
Luo Qiu, his face still cold, held up the report and faced the crowd, speaking first:
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have some bad news to share. Mr. Derek has died of poisoning, and it is highly likely that it was done by someone else."
wow——
As soon as these words were spoken, the people responsible for the night shift started making a fuss.
"Someone poisoned it? Was it... that cup of coffee? The coffee Derek drank before he died?"
"Could someone have poisoned the coffee machine? I had a cup of coffee last night too."
"How...how could things have turned out like this?"
"Don't argue."
Luo Qiu waved his hand, lowering the volume of the crowd:
"I know everyone is surprised by this, but now that things have taken an unexpected turn, I will be formally launching an investigation. I ask for your cooperation."
"Mr. Luo Qiu, how do you need our cooperation?" Carter asked first among the group.
"Yes, how should we cooperate?"
"It's very simple. Next, our Bureau of Investigation will take over this exhibition hall and conduct a comprehensive investigation of the coffee machine, the lounge, and the exhibition area. Since Mr. Derek's death was accidental, there will definitely be traces at the scene. Our patrol agents will be responsible for finding the clues. Our coroner will also transport the body to the Bureau of Investigation for in-depth examination."
"Everyone should trust the technology of our investigation bureau. I will also move everyone to rooms upstairs. Each person will have their own room, and I will prepare blankets for everyone so you can get a good night's sleep. We will also have someone monitor your condition. After you've had a good night's rest, we should have a result."
"Of course, if anyone recalls any clues, feel free to come and chat with me. I'll be waiting here."
Luo Qiu loudly proclaimed his idea.
After the words were spoken, no one objected. At that moment, everyone was weighing the pros and cons.
The two monitoring operators in the control room were the first to realize that, in truth, last night's events had little to do with them. They had been busy the whole time, their work logs filling three pages, the dates recorded on them proving what they had been doing during that period.
The two exchanged a glance and nodded in support.
"Okay, if that's what Detective Luo Qiu says, then let's go upstairs first."
After saying that, the two left the corridor and went upstairs to choose their rooms.
Once the two left, the other three reacted in different ways.
Edmund lowered his head, seemingly hesitating about something. Caspian remained impassive, his gaze fixed on Carter. As for Carter, after watching the two inspectors leave, he glanced back at the remaining two before finally speaking:
"Mr. Luo Qiu, I'll go up too. I believe this matter has nothing to do with anyone else."
"I'm going up too. I've been standing here for so long, I'm really sleepy," Caspian said, following Carter.
After saying that, the two went upstairs one after the other.
Only Edmund remained on the scene. It was then that he realized what was happening and quickly said:
"I...I'll go rest for a bit first."
With that, he turned and hurriedly chased after the crowd. However, after catching up, he still maintained a certain distance from Caspian.
After everyone had left, Smith stood to the side and asked in a low voice:
"Senior, where should we search next? The exhibition hall?"
"No, the chances of finding clues in the exhibition hall are slim. Let's try our luck in Carter's office."
